JFCK - Student Use of Cell Phones and other Electronic Devices
MSAD 35 recognizes that today’s society uses integrated technology on an ever increasing basis. Cellular telephones and other electronic devices can play an important role in both student safety and learning.
Any use of cellular telephones and other electronic devices that violates Board policy, administrative procedure, or school rule is strictly prohibited and may result in confiscation of the device and/or further disciplinary action. This includes, but is not limited to: violations of the student code of conduct, harassment, and cheating. Use of cellular telephones and other electronic devices are prescribed for students as follows:
- Students are prohibited from using privately-owned electronic devices, including, but not limited to: cellular telephones, computers, MP3 players, electronic games, and other forms of electronic devices during the school day unless these devices have been pre-approved for use.
- The use of cameras, including camera phones, is strictly prohibited in locker rooms, restrooms, school buses and classrooms. Permission must be obtained prior to photographing any individual.
- Schools may assign appropriate times and places that MP3 players and other listening devices may be used during the school day.
- Any use of cellular telephones and other electronic devices that violates any Board policy, administrative procedure or school rule is strictly prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to violations of the student code of conduct, harassment, and cheating. Such devices may be subject to search if there is reasonable suspicion that a student is violating Board policies, procedures or school rules, or engaging in other misconduct.
- Students violating these rules will be subject to discipline, which may include:
a. Exclusion of the device from school for an extended period;
b. Sanctions ranging from detention to expulsion from school depending upon the nature of the offense and student’s disciplinary record.
The school district will not be liable for any lost, stolen, or broken cellular phones or other electronic devices.
