KI - Visitors to the Schools
The School Board encourages the active interest and involvement of parents and citizenscommunity inmembers to visit the publicMSAD schools.35 In orderschools to avoidbecome interruptionbetter informed about the day to day operations of the instructional programschools and to promoteobserve the educational process and school activities.
The Board adopts this policy to provide reasonable access to classrooms, activities, and school functions while ensuring the safety of students and staff,staff buildingand principalsavoiding shalldisruption instituteof the instructional program.
The Superintendent/designee will be responsible for developing administrative procedures concerningconsistent visitors towith the schools. Such procedures shall be subject to the approvalterms of thethis Superintendent. It is understood that procedures may vary from school to school due to differing considerations such as the age of the students and building layout and location. policy.
The following general guidelines shall be incorporated in all building-level administrative procedures concerning visitors.
A. The termA “visitor” shall apply tois any person on school grounds or in school buildings who is not ana employeestudent or studentstaff member and who is able to provide a legitimate school-related reason for being present in a school building or on school grounds. Visits to the schools by members of the public or the Board shall not be for the purpose of evaluating teachers/coaches/advisors or curriculum, monitoring teaching methods, reviewing lesson plans, or interviewing school unit.employees.
B. All visitorsvisitors, including parents, school volunteers, substitute personnel, vendors, contracted service providers, Board members, and members of the public, shall report to the school’s main office upon arrivalarrival. atThis section does not apply to parents or others who have been invited to the school.school for an open house, performance, or other pre-planned activity.
C. All visitorsVisitors who wish to visitobserve classrooms,a observeclassroom or aspects of the instructionaleducational program or to meet with a staff membersmember areshall expectedbe required to schedule suchtheir visitsvisit at least 24 hours in advance. Teachers and other staff may not use instructional time to discuss individual matters with visitors.
D. Individual School Board members shall follow the same procedures as other visitors,visitors and also state whether they are visiting the schools onfor personal business or in connection with Board duties.
E.Visitors are prohibited from videotaping or otherwise electronically recording students or staff (including, but not limited to, audio recording). This does not apply to the recording of activities that are open to the public and not protected by copyright laws (e.g. graduation ceremonies, athletic contests).
Visitors shall comply with all applicable Board policies and school rules. Visitors who violate these policies/policies or rules and/or disrupt the safe and orderly operationoperations of the schoolschools shallwill be asked to leave the premises.
F. The building administrator/designeeprincipal hasshall have the authority to refuse entry to school grounds or buildings to persons who do not have legitimate,legitimate school-related business and/or whoto those the principal believes whose visit may disruptcause a disruption, compromise the safety or welfare of students or staff, or otherwise interfere with the orderly operations of the schools.school. This may include, but not be limited to,include the news media, profit-makingvendors, businesses, fundraiserscharitable and other solicitations (except as otherwise permitted by Board policy), and other persons or organizations seeking access to studentsstaff and/or staff.students.
G. School staff shall report unauthorized persons in school buildings or on school grounds or in school buildings to the buildingprincipal/designee. administrator/designee. Unauthorized persons shall be directed to leave the premises immediately.
H. The building administrator/principal/designee may request the assistance of law enforcement as necessary to deal with unauthorized persons or violations of the law by visitorsschool to the schools. visitors.
